A Joint Consortium has been created for the objectives of tenders MARE/2009/05 - LOT 1 – Mediterranean.
The project name is MAREA (Mediterranean hAlieutic Resources Evaluation and Advice).
The Joint Consortium, lead by CoNISMa, will provide Scientific advice and/or other specific preliminary services according to the following Terms of References:
Assessment of the state of aquatic living resources and advise on fisheries management scenarios, such as:
to assess the state of aquatic living resources either not included in the data collection framework or for which such a scientific work has not yet been done or is not going to be done on the short-term or on a regular basis;
to advise on the short-term and medium-term forecasts of stocks biomass and yield under different management options with a view to evaluate the consequences of fishing effort/fishing mortality changes;
to advise on stock-size dependent harvesting strategies and slope-based approaches decision control rules to avoid risk situations for the exploited stocks while ensuring high fisheries productivity;
to advise on fisheries management measures likely to safeguard the production potentials of the stocks assessed.
Ecosystems knowledge and its integration into fisheries management, such as:
to assess the state and long-term evolution of aquatic living resources and explore their dependence upon key ecosystem factors in view of their integration into an ecosystem approach to fisheries management;
to interpret the current state and long-term evolution of fisheries and aquatic living resources in correlation with the historical perspective of changes and alterations of the habitats and environment;
to analyse the empirical relationships and predictive modelling between environmental parameters and stock size and distribution of small pelagic stocks;
to use GIS toolbox for mapping of existing or possible new fishing protected areas;
to advice on the interactions between strictly protected species, exploited stocks and fisheries.
to identify and map habitats to be protected, in particular, marine phanerogams, coralligenous and mäerl beds.
Monitoring of specific fisheries and fishing gears not included or insufficiently covered in the data collection framework or for which such a work has not yet been done or is not going to be done on the short-term or on a regular basis, such as:
to evaluate catch, landing and/or discard composition of certain fisheries
to carry out experimental trials with specific fishing gears (e.g. rapido-trawl, small driftnets, bottom-set nets, surface long-liners, traps, etc.).
Effects of pollutants and of other human activities at sea on aquatic leaving resources and fisheries, such as:
to advise on the likely impacts of certain pollutants on state of aquatic living resources and fishing yields;
to advise on impacts of wastes dumping and other human disturbances at sea on fishing activities, exploited aquatic living resources and habitats;
use of GIS toolbox to analyse spatial competition and consequences on fishing activities of actions by different sea users.
The services may include the collation of existing scientific and bibliographic information, the collection of new scientific and technical information, including, where appropriate by carrying out surveys or trials at sea and in the ports, the carrying out of scientific evaluations and modelling, the analysis of data quality, identification of and access to independent expertise and studies.
